Integrating external search with a Shopify catalogue

I connected an external search and catalogue service to Shopify-rendered product cards. I built shared results, filters, sorting and pagination, synchronised URL state, and handled partial product-loading failures.

Integrating external search with a Shopify catalogue

Concept illustration of a fictional homeware search catalogue with filters, result cards, loading and empty states.

Challenge. Decision. Outcome.

01 / Challenge

Integrate an external search and catalogue service with an existing Shopify storefront. The interface needed to use external discovery logic while retaining Shopify-rendered product cards and their presentation and behaviour.

02 / Decision

I implemented a shared product-grid component for collection and search pages. It received the external service's results and connected them to product-card markup generated by Shopify. I handled loading, empty results and navigation between result pages.

03 / Outcome

The integration was released to production. My contribution covered the connected catalogue and filtering journey, reusable services and cart-interface changes, including related-product recommendations and quantity behaviour. I implemented the frontend integration rather than the external search engine itself, and no numerical search or sales improvement is claimed.

One grid for collection and search results

I implemented a shared product-grid component for collection and search pages. It received the external service's results and connected them to product-card markup generated by Shopify. I handled loading, empty results and navigation between result pages.

Filters reflected in the URL

I connected filter changes to repeated loading of the results. Search, sorting and filtering parameters were represented through the URL, and changing conditions reset pagination. Request preparation was separated so different parts of the interface used a consistent data format.

Services and partial failures

I separated requests, pagination and result rendering into shared mechanisms and documented their interfaces for future integration and maintenance. Product cards were obtained from Shopify server templates by result identifiers. Independent requests were handled so a failure for one product did not prevent the remaining cards from loading.

Result and handover

The integration was released to production. My contribution covered the connected catalogue and filtering journey, reusable services and cart-interface changes, including related-product recommendations and quantity behaviour. I implemented the frontend integration rather than the external search engine itself, and no numerical search or sales improvement is claimed.
